Coaches

DFFO 18 - Joe Steenhuysen

Joe has been involved with the sport of volleyball in the Grand Rapids area for many years.  He assisted his wife Roxane at both South Christian High School and East Kentwood High School for several seasons.  They led the EK program to one Class A runner-up finish and two Class A state championships.  He has coached several Division 1 athletes, including Val (Sterk) Kemper and Kele Eveland, who have both earned 1st Team All-American honors.

DFFO 17 - Kyle Stahl

Kyle  brings several year of playing and coaching experience to the DFFO program.  He recently completed his second season as a full-time assistant coach at Western Michigan where he is also a graduate of the university.  Stahl also worked as a student assistant under Coach Munson from August 2007 until December 2010.  Stahl has worked with the Dead Frog and DFFO programs for several season and also has experience coaching the Lakeshore High Performance program over the last two seasons; in 2011, he led them to a bronze medal in the Gold division at the 2011 High Performance championships in Tucson, Ariz.  It was the first time any time from the Lakeshore region had ever medaled at the prestigious tournament.  


DFFO 17/18 - Cesar Maza & Jessica Brown

Cesar graduated from Glenbrook North High School on the north shore of Chicago. He is current working on his undergraduate studies in Film, Video, and Media  at Western Michigan University. He has played volleyball since 2004, including two years of varsity for the nationally ranked Glenbrook North Spartans. He also played 1 year at Shoreline VBC, 2 years club volleyball at Rolling Thunder VBC, and 3 years for Western Michigan Men's Volleyball Club. He just finished 2nd year as the Undergraduate Assistant Coach for Western Michigan University Volleyball, along with his first season as head coach for Plainwell's JV volleyball team. He aspires to pursue a career in producing music and maybe move to Europe. 

Jessica just finished a great four year career at Western Michigan University.  A few of her honors include three 1st team All-MAC selections, as well as MAC Freshmen of the year in 2009.  In 2011 she was named to the COBRA Magazine All-National Third Team.  In addition to her on court play, she has also earned MAC All-Academic honors.  She is a graduate of East Kentwood High School.

DFFO 16 - Tim Balice

Tim Balice is in his first season as the head coach at Kalamazoo Valley after stepping into an interim assistant role in 2011 for the Cougars.  Balice inherited a program that finished third to last in conference that did not qualify for any post-season play.  After completion of the 2012 campaign with Balice at the helm the Cougars finished 3rd overall in conference and qualified for not only the MCCA conference tournament but also the NJCAA regional tournament.  Under Balice’s guidance the Cougar netters ranked in the top-50 in the country in kills per set, total attacks, digs, digs per set, and all blocking statistics.  Aside from heading the program’s strength and conditioning, Balice has been involved with camps and clinics at Michigan State, Purdue, Western Michigan, and directs his own at Kalamazoo Valley.  Previous to coming to Kalamazoo Valley, Balice coached at local Kalamazoo high school Heritage Christian Academy (2009-2011).   A former student-athlete at neighboring Western Michigan University, Balice played football while receiving his bachelor’s degrees in both biomedical science and exercise science.  While at WMU, Balice played on the men’s club volleyball team as a middle hitter.  Although a native of Hawaii, Balice grew up in Ionia, MI is currently finishing his master’s degree in public health from Michigan State University.


DFFO 15 - Jesse Ortiz

Jesse Ortiz began working with the Ferris State volleyball program in 2011 after serving four seasons (2007-10) as the First Assistant Coach at NCAA Division II member Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif.  As a member of the Seawolves Volleyball staff (2008-10), Ortiz helped guide the Seawolves to three consecutive NCAA-II West Regional Tournament appearances.  In his four years at SSU, the Seawolves registered a combined 76-39 overall record (.661 winning pct.) and compiled a 53-29 mark (.646) in the prestigious California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).  Both the 2008 and 2009 teams produced 23-win seasons with 23-7 and 23-8 overall records, respectively.    In 2011, Ortiz helped the Bulldog Volleyball program achieve its best record in school history (27-3), win the GLIAC Championship, and earn a trip to the NCAA-II Mid-West Regional Tournament.  Ortiz is currently pursuing his Master’s in Business Administration at Ferris State University.


DFFO 14 - Heather Magelssen

Heather played for Portage Northern High School and was the setter for three-consecutive Class A Michigan state volleyball titles.  She was a four-time all state honoree, as well as earning AAU and USVBA All-American honors playing for the Dead Frog Club.  She played her college ball at Indiana University and finished up her career at Western Michigan University.  She has coached for Delton Kellogg High School, Portage Northern High School and is currently the Varsity coach at East Kentwood High School.  She has also coached many years and all age divisions for Dead Frog volleyball club and been a part of the DFFO volleyball club for the last three years.


DFFO 13 - Tiffannie Gates

Tiffannie has a variety of playing experience growing up in Southern California, including club volleyball with California Jrs. As a senior year in high school, she was named one of Volleyball Monthly's US Fab 50. She went on to set for Arizona State on a full ride scholarship and then coached club in Arizona before moving to Michigan.  She has coached club here for 8 years, as well as 4 years of JV and 3 years of Varsity at East Grand Rapids HS. She just finished her second year coaching the Varsity squad at Grand Rapids Christian High School.  They made it to the Class A quarterfinals this season.


Lead Coach - Ryan Manning

Ryan is an alumnus of Western Michigan University and just completed his eighth season as an assistant coach with the Broncos and his fifth season as associate head coach. Before WMU he spent five seasons as the assistant coach at East Carolina University.  Manning was also an active member of the men's club volleyball team while he was a student at WMU.  He has worked with Dead Frog and DFFO for several seasons and led the DFFO 17 team to a 5th place finish at nationals last season.
